Since the beginning of 2004 more than 40 children aged under five years drowned in Queensland’s residential swimming pools. Almost 70 per cent of these drownings occurred because of defective fences and gates.
Consequently the Queensland Government is implementing a staged swimming pool safety improvement strategy. Stage one was introduced on 1 December 2009 and applies to new residential pools.
Stage two will come into effect on 1 December 2010 and will apply to both new and existing indoor and outdoor swimming pools. This means all rental premises will need to have a pool safety certificate in place before they can be rented, including renewing existing agreements, after 1 December.
A new Act – the Building and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2010 – came into law in May 2010 and establishes the pool safety inspector licensing system.
